The objective of this project is to enhance (or initiate) best practices in the management of hazardous chemical and biological waste in the African Atlantic Facade (AAF) region and in Tunisia

Phase 1: Is 12 months long and will involve

  • Compilation of all international requirements and guidelines for the safe and secure management of hazardous chemical and biological waste
  • Compilation of inventories, per country, of their hazardous chemical and biological waste management needs, their existing chemical agent and biological agent detection equipment and a list of their chemical and biological reference measurement laboratories.

In addition to the above tasks, the project will also examine the following specific issues:

  • Incineration of waste
  • Export of phosphates
  • Stocks of expired chemicals (pesticides/insecticides)
  • Chemical waste from industries such as petrochemical, agrochemical, pharmaceutical
  • Chemically polluted sites
  • Hazardous biological waste arising from hospitals, slaughter houses etc.

Phase 2: is up to 30 months long and will involve:

  • Development of a sustainable training system and provision of training for hazardous chemical waste management.
  • Development of a sustainable training system and provision of training for hazardous biological waste management.
  • Awareness raising on the security concerns associated with hazardous chemical and biological waste materials and reinforcement  (nationally and regionally) of the practice of sharing and transferring best practices in the management of hazardous chemical and biological waste.
  • Capacity building of personnel in the ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories (identified during Phase 1) with respect to improvements in measurements and testing of chemical and biological waste components.
