 ‘CBRN CoE Project 35’, a project funded by the European Union, DG DEVCO under the CBRN Centers of Excellence (CoE) Initiative focuses on the management of hazardous chemical and biological waste in 8 Partner Countries in the Region.


CBRN Project 35 has gathered 30 specialists in Chemical and Biological work practices from Liberia to meet with European experts and to agree on details for capacity building, awareness and training. The National kick-off lasted two days and was held at the Cape and Mamba Point Hotels, Monrovia. This is the third national kick off conference in a series of eight for each of the countries included in the project.


 Prior to commencing the conference the P35 team conducted a visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where they met with Deputy Foreign Minister for International Corporation and Economic Integration, Mr Thomas Kaydor. The Deputy Minister expressed his enthusiasm for co-operation with the EU and welcomed the project team personally. He received a presentation on the projects objectives and accompanied the team to the conference site where he delivered an introductory speech.


Martin Scott-Tabi, the National Focal Point for CBRN in Liberia, gave a second speech welcoming the Minister and outlining the agenda for the day. Mr Scott-Tabi also thanked the Minister for his interest in the project as well as the project team for their continued efforts.


In attendance were representatives from Monrovia, Grand Cape Mount, Margibi County, Paynesville, Bong County, and Sinoe. The institutions represented were Cuttington University, national fire service, Golden Veroleum, environmental protection agency (EPA), Hospital laboratories, BHP Biliton, Liberia petroleum Refinery Company, Liberia sanitation, Liberia

Laboratory standards, Health Regulatory Services, Monrovia City Corporation, Ministry of health and social welfare, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Presentations laid out a plan of action for each of the 6 work packages involved in project. Subjects of the presentations by experts from Ibaconsultores were given on, “Management of hazardous Chemical waste” and “Management of hazardous Biological waste.” From Uninsubria expert, “Awareness and training on the management of hazardous waste.” Finishing the presentations, experts from Aenor delivering, “Strengthening laboratory staff capacity on waste CB - ISO / IEC 17025.”
